UNIT 1 EVALUATION
During the whole of unit 1 course I have learnt several techniques and processes of photography, such as, cyanotypes, photograms, pinhole photography, light painting. Also a few personal projects which included; street photography, abstraction, contrast, disguise and absurd. Every new subject or project we moved onto we would all have to research some photographers and artists that had work related to what we were doing for the lesson. I found this very useful because it helped me a lot with inspiration for images that i had to work on. I found pinterest a huge help in finding inspiration for my work on personal projects, it has helped me with the result of my final images now. It gave me ideas for different themes to use for my work. The Tallis photography weebly also helped a lot when i was stuck with ideas or methods of how i should approach the certain task we were doing.
Techniques and processes such as cyanotypes i enjoyed. It consisted of using the natural light outside to develop the images on photo-sensitive paper which was able to be exposed to the natural light, then objects would be placed on top and left outside for a good 5-10 minutes. Once this happened the light would leave an imprint of the objects on the paper. I found this technique very interesting and wanted to experiment more. Another technique was photograms/rayograms. I found this technique quite difficult as the process is more complicated, light-sensitive paper had to be used in a dark room, using a light we had to place it under red light first then place the objects on the photographic paper and then expose it with a white light for a couple seconds and develop the images using chemicals. I found this technique very challenging and i didn't really get the hang of it but i enjoyed it.
Another technique was pinhole photography. This was using a cylinder shaped container and completely blacked out inside the container and sealing the lid then piercing a small hole in the middle; this is where the light it allowed through to develop the image of light-sensitive paper that is placed inside. This project was very difficult because you had to make sure your home-made lens was made carefully otherwise you would just get black/grey film. A final technique was light painting. I enjoyed this particularly because the experiments were fun and the outcomes of the images were good. I learnt how to change the settings of a DSLR camera to capture the right amount of light for light painting.
We also completed a couple personal projects such as street photography. Which we researched and then attempted some of our own to get an idea. We went on a trip to the tate and on the way it was a good opportunity to take images of things that were not the school. It was a good experience and it taught me better techniques when taking images. Another project was abstraction. It consisted of taking images of the things surrounding us and natural things, that could represent different lines, shapes, colours and textures that would make it absurd.
